Don’t fall victim to Motor Certificate Theft

Transparency is a good thing. But as with anything, there is a point whereby a company can reveal too much information, putting the business at risk from fraudsters.

At present, there is an increase in the level of sensitive data displayed in the public domain, leading to an increase in companies falling victim to fraud.

Such is the case with motor insurance, with a growing number of companies displaying details of their motor insurance, or indeed their insurance certificate, on their websites. While it’s understandable that companies want to appear professional and show their customers that they take their legal requirements very seriously, this can be a hazardous step to take, with significant consequences, as it gives fraudsters all the information they need to appear to be legitimately insured.

As a result, we recommend removing all motor insurance from the public domain, and any other documentation that could lead to you being targeted for identity theft. As a matter of priority, it’s essential to review all documentation displayed on your website and assess the sensitivity of the information provided. If in doubt, it is better to remove it rather than risk it being accessible to fraudsters.

We understand that companies upload this information onto their websites so that it’s easily accessible to staff members in the event they need it. However, we would advise giving staff access to such information via an intranet or private network, providing a greater level of protection.
