GB stickers not valid for driving abroad after 28th September 2021

If you’re driving abroad after 28th September 2021, you’ll need to display a UK sticker, rather than a GB sticker.

The United Nations (UN) has advised that GB stickers, which have been in use for 111 years, will no longer be valid for driving abroad. Instead, motorists wishing to drive on foreign roads will need to display a UK sticker or magnet. This is to ensure the inclusion of Northern Ireland, which is not included in the term ‘Great Britain’.

It’s the second alteration affecting number plates this year. On 1st January, following the implementation of Brexit, new number plates went into circulation, featuring the GB sign and Union Jack Flag. This replaced the previous ‘Euro’ plates, which showed the stars of the European Union with the letters GB. After 28th September, number plates featuring the GB sign with the Union Jack Flag will no longer be valid.

The UK Government has said: ““The United Kingdom is changing the distinguishing sign that it had previously selected for display in international traffic on vehicles registered in the United Kingdom, from “GB” to “UK”... this change will take effect on 28 September 2021.”

So, if you have a GB emblem printed on your number plates, you can either order one of the new UK plates or simply use a UK sticker/magnet alongside your old GB plate.

The new stickers will be available online in the run up to 28th September 2021 for £1.50 each and you can purchase them in post offices and garages.
