Recent air traffic chaos shows the need for correct travel insurance

Last August 28th, numerous passenger flights were either cancelled or delayed due to an issue with air traffic control. This resulted in financial burdens and ruined holiday plans for countless individuals not covered by their airline or travel insurance policies. This emphasises the significance of obtaining adequate insurance coverage.

Bank Holiday Monday problems
The problems on Bank Holiday Monday were caused by a technical failure in the automatic flight planning system operated by NATS, which provides national air traffic control services in the UK. With the system down for several hours and the backup system also suspended, the number of planes in the sky was severely restricted, and hundreds more flights were cancelled on Tuesday as the fallout continued to disrupt travel.

Approximately 250,000 passengers were affected by the turmoil, resulting in the cancellation of roughly 1,600 flights across the UK. On Tuesday morning, 300 flights were cancelled, and it took several more days to resolve the situation and ensure that everyone returned to their intended destinations.

Compensation not due
When flights are cancelled or severely delayed, airlines are legally obligated to provide passengers with accommodation, food, and transportation. However, compensation is not required in certain situations if the issue is out of the airline's control. Currently, NATS is not responsible for providing compensation, meaning passengers must cover any additional costs incurred. Travel insurance may cover these expenses as long as the policy is sufficient.

Protection through travel insurance
With issues such as technical problems, staff strikes and the ongoing threat of cyberattack always present, it’s just as well to be prepared for any eventuality when travelling. This means having the correct level of travel insurance in place, offering protection against delays, cancellations, lost luggage and documents, and personal liability.
